The idea of freshly-baked bread delivered to our door is TBH the sort of seduction we’ve been waiting all our lives for.
Step forward then, One Mile Bakery Hale.
The new opening delivers by bike such beautiful treats for the tummy as artisan loaves and amazing local, seasonal produce in the form of warming soups and frankly gorgeous preserves.
So what’s it all about?
In 2012, Guardian journalist–turned–baker Elisabeth Mahoney launched the first One Mile Bakery in Cardiff., a hyper-local bespoke delivery service within a mile of her townhouse, delivering homemade bread, soup and jam to subscribers by bike. She ran inspirational baking classes in her micro-bakery kitchen, and taught more than 2,100 people how to bake at home.
And now – the award-winning concept is here in the North West
One Mile Bakery Haleis the first OMB in the north-west run by Matt Townley, a passionate cook and amazing baker. Also delivering within a mile radius of his home, Matt’s teaching the core OMB classes in his kitchen, as well as adding his own class, Bread & Beer (launching September).
The classes teach introductory baking skills and everyone gets their baking to take home, with recipes and notes.
Meet the teacher
Matt grew up in North Wiltshire, part of a big farming family of passionate home cooks. He now lives with his wife and daughter in Hale.
“I love food and I love to cook. When I was younger I was told by a very wise person: ‘If you want to show somebody that you really love them, cook them a good meal‘. I have always lived by this mantra.
One Mile Bakery Hale offers one and three–month subscriptions of bread, soup and jam, delivered by bike within a mile.
Subscriptions must include bread, but other parts of the subscription are optional; prices start from £14 a month for four loaves delivered.
Bread-making classes, with a two-course lunch and wine, are at £125.
Classes include Introduction to Baking; French Baking; Introduction to Sourdough; Breads of the World; Italian Baking and – unique to Hale – Bread & Beer.
The original OMB has been featured as one of the UK’s best bakeries by Stylist magazine, The Sunday Times (Top 20) and The Daily Telegraph (Top 25) and has been shortlisted in the Best Independent Retailer category of the prestigious Observer Food Monthly awards for four consecutive years.
